Pastor Sylvester Sumler Jr. is a native of Norfolk, Virginia, and a devoted servant of Christ who leads with grace, wisdom, and a heart for service. As the Senior Pastor of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church in Chesapeake, Virginia, he is committed to transformative ministry and community empowerment.

Pastor Sumler holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies and has earned numerous leadership certificates, establishing a strong foundation for his pastoral calling. He is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University to further deepen his theological understanding and pastoral effectiveness.

An accomplished author, Pastor Sumler penned The Breakup—a powerful guide helping believers transition from a life of sin to one of spiritual freedom. His writing continues to inspire and uplift those seeking a closer walk with God.

Widely known as a mentor and a source of encouragement, Pastor Sumler is passionate about fostering spiritual growth, biblical literacy, and leadership development.

At the center of his life is his family. He is the proud husband of First Lady Dr. Charmaine Sumler and a loving father to their daughter, River Camille Sumler. Together, they are devoted to uplifting others and advancing the Kingdom of God.

Dr. Sumler holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work with a concentration in Public Administration, a Master’s in Clinical Social Work, a Master’s in Leadership, and an earned Doctorate in Biblical Counseling.

With a unique blend of academic excellence and heartfelt compassion, she empowers individuals, strengthens families, and actively contributes to the growth and vitality of the Greater Mount Zion community.
